The theme for this term in ERS is Health and Nutrition. We all like food. We all like our health. Our health depends almost totally on the food that we consume and then what we do to take care of it after. This term, we will read a report about changing diets around the world and the growing concerns about health and nutrition.
Thai food is famous. Thai food is something Thai people take enormous pride in. Yet, many worry that busy Thai people are turning to other fast food options: more salts, more fats, more sodas... more convenience. American fast food restaurants are finding success in Bangkok and around the country. This brings up concerns of health and changing diets among some groups of Thai people, and worries that they too might follow the unhealthy and obese trends we're seeing in the West.
The question for this first blog is: How has your diet (ie: the food that you eat) changed since you were younger? Has it changed at all? Or, have you made conscious decisions about what you eat, how much you eat, and so on. I'd like to know.
Remember to include your ID# in your post. I look forward to reading your thoughts. Aj. M

ReplyDeleteThe food that people eats depend on their choices and tastes. Many people likes to eat at home and some likes to eat at restaurant. Mostly children, teenagers and adults have different choices of food. As far as I'm concerned the food that I eat as a child and now are completely different.
As a child, about 8 years old, I got to eat all the healthy food. My mother always thinks that a child should be given the most healthy and nutritious food. She was really expert in cooking and I was always served with delicious food and at the end of the day I was always full and satisfied. When I was young, I did not eat a lot of fast food because my mother was against it. In my childhood, the main thing that my mother focused on was to always prepare a meal with some vegetable so that it had some food value. During my childhood, the most tempting thing for me was ice-cream mint flavor and I used to get to eat ever Saturdays by convincing my mother.
As I grew older at about 12 years, the food that I ate was not the same as before because I chose the food that I wanted to eat and did not care about the veggies anymore but rather enjoyed my every meal. My mother always complained when I ate junk food. She always said frequently that "We eat to live, not live to eat". I did not listen to what she said and later on I suffered from overweight and had a bad time.
As now I am much more concern about the food I eat because I am very conscious about my body shape . There is a saying that "You are what you eat", and I truly believe it through my experiences. Now i eat the food that is healthy because i do not want to suffer from a bad health again.
Thank you for your journal. You have told a nice story that many of us can relate to. When we are young, our diet depends on our families who feed us. I definitely "live to eat"... but I also "exercise to eat"... if I eat a lot, I have to run.

ReplyDeleteEverything around you change every time the time pass. As we grew up, we experienced these changes even if we notice it or not. One of the significant changes is the way we choose food.
As a child, my parents encouraged me to drink a lot of milk and sometime I even drink it instead of food. They said that it will make me taller and stronger. Moreover, they even insist me to eat a lot of vegetables, which sometime they have a weird taste. Even though, I did not enjoy eating this stuff, but still I manage to survive it.
My diet changes again when i am a teenager. I started to choose the food i like without concerning about the consequences. In addition, i started to be overweight and everything i do are more tired than before. As a result, i begun exercise every afternoon to maintain my fitness and burning down the fat.
As i am a young adult now, i starts to maintain my fitness. I always remind myself about the consequences of following your mouth rather than your health. However, sometime i still follow my mouth on something i desired, but when i do i must double my workout time. As a result, these thing kept active all the time.
I have the same feeling as you. My workout time depends very much on the amount of food I have.

ReplyDeleteWe are sure will not always eat the same all the time. When I was kid, I can't decide what to eat because I didn't have the choice to choose. My parent used to prepare a bread and a middle-size bottle of milk when driving me and my brother to school in the morning. School prepared lunch for us, little children, too. For dinner, parent made for us. Basically, when I was a kid, I didn't really get to choose what I want to eat. Even though I sometime buy myself some snacks. Which is not really healthy...
As I grow up, I started to realize that junk food, snacks, and fast food are threat for our health. In high-school, I rarely buy snacks, little cookies, or chocolates. Eating bread with a bottle of a milk in the morning became my lifestyle, I felt like I can't really feel I already eat a breakfast if I didn't drink milk. Weird right? I'm now always avoid junk food and having a normal good food during lunch and dinner. In addition, only eating healthy food doesn't make you healthier. Combining sport and exercise with a good food is the best way to maintain your weight.
After finish my high-school, I have a plenty of time to spent,so I decided to start working out. Of course, before working out I have to do some research first. My work out took 4 days a week, each day include weight training + 20 minutes cardio exercise. I learned that people have to take proteins in order to grow their muscle. Some will use protein powder or we call it protein shake. Due to I didn't want to spend so much my parent's money, so I decide not to buy it. Even I really want to take. I looked on the internet to find food that can replace the shake and found top 10 foods highest in protein. They are chicken breast, fishes, cheese, pork loin, tofu, and etc. Every post-workout, I ate my chicken breast that I prepared and it feel good. After workout for 4 months, I lost nearly 10 pounds (5 kilos)
Here, I'm gonna share a tip which is really helpful for burning fat. It's call HIIT, meaning High-Intensity Interval Training. There are many ways to perform these exercises. My way is to sprint for 20 seconds then walk for 10 seconds, repeat it after and after again. So far, it's the best way to burn fat.
PS. Weight exercise doesn't make you lighter, so do sit-up. Cardio is the best way. Try to spend time on the treadmill 2-4 days a week.
Wow... you can be a fitness consultant. It seems you pay a lot of attention to what you put in your body and how you manage it. You will have a lot to contribute to this course. Thank you for your journal.

ReplyDeleteKids are known to be carefree, they live their life without making any necessary decisions. While on the other hand, parents are known to be the decision makers such as what kids wear, where to attend school, when to sleep and ofcourse what to eat. So when I was a kid, I wasnt really a big fan of food compared to now. I used to eat only the exact amount of what my parents forced me to. I remember this incident when I used to count grains of rice because for me when it comes to eating, its torturing. And obviously as kids we didnt really pay that much attention to how healthy or unhealthy our diet might be unlike now.
According to me, what we put inside our body are what we are made of, or we are what we eat. Eventhough its a cliche but I think most of the population do not really focus that much on their diet, including me. Even though lately Ive been trying to have selfcontrol but these days there are alot of cravings such as cheesy fast foods or the best dessert in town. As unhealthy meals become more and more popular, its become even harder to control your desire of indulging them.
My diet have completely changed as Ive grown. I could consider calling myself a foodie as now I am quite a big fan of food. But I try my best to have the least I could, I try to eat everything I desire but in small amount. To be honest, I dont really exercise as much as I should but Ive been trying to work on it. These days compared to old ones, I try to eat clean, focus mostly on vegetables and fruits eventhough its kinda tough but so far Ive been doing good.
Very good. Food is great. And if you live near/in an incredible city like Bangkok, you have access to world-class food, so its good to take advantage of it. It is a big advantage for living here.

ReplyDeleteMost of the kids love to eat fast food and so did I. I was quite a big fan of these fast food restaurants since when I was young. I can remember that I used to beg my parents to take me there. Now that I grow up, I realize that I tend to avoid these kind of foods if possible as I prefer Thai food more. The only advantage eating fast food is that it is convenience and fast. There are some changes of my eating habit. I used to hate Thai spicy food very much but now I discover that my taste is getting more and more spicy day by day. Moreover, after I realize that these fast food contain a lot of fat, I even try harder to eat it to prevent myself from becoming obese. People tend to be careful of their appearance as soon as they turn into teenagers.
Another change of my eating habit is vegetable. I am pretty sure that every kid hate vegetable because of one reason, bitterness. When I was a kid, I would always request the waiters or waitresses not to put any vegetable into my meal or just throw it off my plate. However as I grow up, my parents force these vegetable into my stomach. Soon it becomes my habit of eating vegetable. Nowadays, I prefer fruits as a light meal in the middle of the day over potato chips that I used to die for when I was a kid.
Now that I grow up, I choose to eat healthier food for the sake of my body and health. After looking back to my childhood, I am quite surprised of how my diet change completely.
Interesting comment... particularly about vegetables. I started to think that actually... I just don't like vegetables too. I can eat it. I do eat it. But I don't want it in the same way that I want meat and salt and sweet things. Maybe this a weak point for me.

ReplyDeleteTalking about my diet since I was a kid, I think it has been changed a lot. I used to eat unhealthy food and no one could force me to eat if I don’t like.
When I was little I like to eat rice with fish sauce or dried shredded pork. Most of the time my family eating dinner outside with various type of food, I would end up eating a bowl of rich with fish sauce. Moreover, I really don’t like to eat vegetable. So most of the thing I ate, when I was young, was carbohydrate, which is very unhealthy.
Time has passed, I started to love cooking. One day I think that if I don’t eat vegetable and try other types of food, I wouldn’t know what those food taste like. This made me eat more vegetable and try diverse kind of food. Sometimes I do eat fast food such as McDonald and KFC because of several reasons. For example, when I’m in a rush to the university in the morning, I would drive to McDonald drive-thru and grasp some burger or pie on hand. I know it is unhealthy, but sometimes we can’t just avoid it.
Since I was little I think my diet changed a lot. I changed from the person who never eats vegetable to the one who can eat almost everything and always try new dishes that I never eat before.
It is great that you can cook. I think this skill cannot be over-stated. If you can cook, you can really control so much of your life.
DeleteFast food is a weak point for all of us. These restaurants have been very good at making us want their food even though we know its bad.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, I did not have the authority to pick what I eat; my parents and grandparents did. I had really bad eyesight so my parents made me eat lots of vegetables such as pumpkin and green beans. I remember coming back home from school and having to eat one whole pumpkin with some green beans on the side as a snack. I also had to eat a lot of rice. My grandparents believed that if young children don't eat rice, they will not grow. Because my parents would not allow store bought food, my meals would always taste bland. They said that store bought food contain really high amount of sodium and might cause harm to our family's health. I got a share of pop only whenever my parents drank them. Whenever I go to restaurants, my parents would only order water. Overall, my diet when I was young was really healthy.
Now that I am old enough to make my own decisions, I eat a lot more unhealthy food. I eat a lot more fast food, fried food, foods with more flavors and spicy food compared to when I was younger. I also drink a lot more pop whenever I go to restaurants. I barely eat any vegetable and rice. I hate vegetable and can't even force myself to eat it; but I really love fruits. I eat every kind of fruit except durian. I am so sick of rice because I feel like I've been eating it for 16 years and felt like I haven't grown as much as I expected.
Instead of snacking on pumpkin and green beans, I love snacking on pretzels and green apples with peanut butter. I used to hate peanut butter when I was young. Now that I'm older, it is one of my favorite thing to eat.
My diet has completely changed since I've grown. My parents don't even consider the food I eat food because they're just rubbish food. I eat way too much snacks and I do not receive enough nutrients from real food.
Salt is so powerful. Sometimes, I just crave salt and I don't know why. There's nothing wrong with it, but balance is always important.

ReplyDeleteIn today's modern world, children tend to eat more junk food than healthy food. And i personally believe that our diet has changed dramatically over the past years from fresh, unrefined and unsprayed to those foods that are frozen, canned and heavily processed.
To begin with, the eating habits of children have adopted in the modern times are dangerous to their health. Many children, these days, prefer to eat from fast food restaurants. In contrast, My parents did not allow me to eat junk food when i was a kid. For this reason, i still do not feel like eating hamburgers or french fries, instead i prefer vegetables and something healthy which i can keep my body balanced.
The food in those restaurants does not only have insufficient nutrients but it also causes diseases in them. I once watched a news about the mouse running in a bag of big Mac bun. The most shocking part of this story was that the manager of restaurant ordered the employees to serve those bread to the customers. After knowing the fact, I never went to eat at the fast food restaurant. In addition, i would rather cook myself at home. And eating at home is more familiar with me since my parents raised me in that way. These diseases may not be obvious at once but during later age they come into action. Among them blood pressure and heart diseases are commonly seen. Therefore, parent should pay special attention to towards their eating habits.
To sum up, i believe that my diet has not changed over the years since my mom was very careful when choosing food however, the diet from modern days and the past days has changed significantly. Moreover, parents should consider about changing their children's eating habits in order to make them physically and mentally healthy.
Interesting comment. It is interesting for me (as someone who grew up in Canada) to see Asian people, who are famous for their incredible food, starting to enjoy the fast food options that come from places like Canada, which is absolutely not famous for food. The changes in diet are worrying.

ReplyDeleteDifferent people have different food preferences and this may vary depending on the age and the environment to which they are exposed. For instance, as I matured I experienced types of food I consume.
In general, young people tend to concern less on what they eat; they rather go for food that please their taste buds (i.e. lollies, chips, chocolate) but as they grew up, they started to be more conscious about their diet and how it affected their health and body. When I was young, I couldn’t eat spicy food and some of the vegetables. However, now I enjoy and appreciate eating spicy food and vegetables. This is because I came across with more chances of having varieties of food and my parents also encouraged to do so. Moreover, I am aware of the effects of food that can have on my body. Being a teenager, I am greatly interested in having a good body build so I begun to control types and amount of food I eat as it is undoubtedly crucial to my diet.
Environment is another main factor that shapes up people’s diet; the choices of food depend on specific market of a country. Due to the fact that I have been studying in different countries such as Australia, China and Thailand, my dietary changed according to the corresponding environment. For instance, I had western food in Australian and Chinese food in China. Furthermore, media also plays a significant role in influencing people on diet trend, one very successful advertisement of product can attract many of the customers and hence changing their eating habits.
In conclusion, my diet has change over time and it is largely due to deliberate decision I made corresponds to the maturity and the environment.
This is a good comment. Our diets often change because we change. We move to different places. We grow up. We become more interested in more things (to eat). I like this.

ReplyDeleteThere are various choices of food for people to choose these days, and there are several objects for people to change their diet from the past. Therefore, my daily food has been significantly altered since I was young.
To begin with, when I was young, I mostly spent time with my parents. My parents always provided diet for me, and they usually did not allow me to consume unhealthy food. For instance, my parents made me drink milk every single day because I would get teller and stronger, they also taught me to eat many kinds of vegetable.
However, as I grow up, I completely select food that different from the past because i have more freedom to choose my own food. Moreover, nowadays, i have a little time to eat during the day. For example, most universities grant around 1 hour for students to go to their lunch. As a result, I and my friends choose to go to fast food restaurant because we are able to save more time and go back to class on time.
In conclusion, my parents always offer me diet, but, in current day, my diet seriously change from the past. The reasons that I change my food because most of my new diet is fast food, and I can save a lot of time from it.
When we get so busy, food becomes just a kind of fuel... not something we take our time and enjoy. We eat because we need to eat.

ReplyDeleteFood is something very important. Its practically been there since mankind exist. Many people have different cultural foods, tastes in foods, fondness of food. So I believe that almost 80% of people will have food changing experience from childhood until present.
I myself also had that experience. I am an Indian and so since I was a child I ate a lot of Indian food but because I was born in Thailand I also ate a lot of Thai food. I ate fast foods too but very little because my parents were protective that way.
But as I went into my teenage I started to consume a lot of fast foods. Also because I had a lot of different culture friends I ate a lot of different culture food. Now that I have tasted many different food I tend to bring these food into my daily meals.
So to answer the question 'has my diet changed since my childhood?', Yes. From only eating Indian and Thai food, now I eat fast food and different cultural food. And the reason it has changed a lot is because when I was a kid my parents took decisions for my meals but nowadays I have the freedom of eating whatever I want and whenever I want, which to be honest isn't that good for my health.
Yes... and as a young person, many don't take too much time to think about health... because their healthy! So eat what you want. As you get older, and a little slower, and a little weaker, your will eat a little better.

ReplyDeleteThere are tremendous kinds of food. People can choose whatever they prefer to eat in each day. However, my nutrition is changed since I grow up dramatically.
Initially, my diet has changed due to the appearance. As i grow up, I become to pay more attention on my shape and character. I decide to consume less fats and carbohydrate and eat more vegetable such as salad. Additionally, the amount of food which I consume in each day also decrease.
Secondly, the habitation for food is different. My mother used to cook and prepare a meal for me when I was a child. Moreover, she mentioned that every meal has to contain a good nutrient. However, I live in a dormitory nowadays. I have to eat in some restaurant that may not have a good quality of food and an adequate nutrient.
In conclusion, some people have their own lifestyles. They may eat different food. However, my diet has totally altered. I try to eat healthy food as much as I can even though it is hard to find when I live in a dormitory.
It is a problem when the food available to you is not healthy. This is a problem for many people around the world where access to food is not good.
