Journal Blog #1: Describe a Leader in your Life.

There are many people in my life to whom I have turned for advice at various stages. People who have helped me through difficult decisions or who have turned me to right path. Many of them are advisors, teachers, strangers, and mentors, but not many of them are who I'd call leaders.

For me, leaders are people who inspire. I don't even have to know them or be directly affected by them. But they make me want to be a better person. They make me humble and make me strive to be better and to do more for other people if that is what they call for.

Aung San Suu Kyi comes to mind for me. I don't know her. I'm not from her country and have never experienced the kind of persecution or pain that she or her people have in their lifetimes. Quite the opposite. I have lived a life of mostly privilege and opportunity, and so to know her story and to observe her grace in the face of such tyranny and corruption, it is truly inspiring, and I consider her one of the great leaders of this generation.

In your first journal blog, describe a leader who you consider important in your life. What is it about that person that makes he or she a great leader?

Make sure to include your ID# and Section # in your post. I look forward to reading your thoughts. Aj. M

The population of the world according to the CIA world fact book was 7,095,217,980 in July 2013. However, only a few important individuals will be worth remembering after their death. This type of people is the ones whom I consider a true leader. You don’t need to know someone in person in order to place them as a real leader in your life. It’s all about inspiration from acknowledging those wonderful things that they have contributed to make this world a better place.
Nelson Mandela, a leader who brought equality to South Africa is who I’m talking about. After having heard about his struggle for the right of the black African people, I started questioning why Nelson had to be that person who stood up and lead. He could have waited thinking that there might be someone else to do this, but no. He readily step forward knowing that it will require satisfaction. 25 years of his life time was spend in prison. In the End, he became the first dark skin president of South Africa.
This remarkable leader made me realize that if you want something to happen, it shouldn't be a matter of waiting or feeling hurt that you can’t choose your race and nationality, otherwise everything will end before it didn't even started.

In general, leaders are people who lead, control and influence other. To be a leader, some people said that we have to see a problem that needs to be fixed and find the way to achieve. In my point of view, leaders are people that I respect, impress and have a good vision in term of thinking.
The person who I will talk about is my high school friend that I respect him to be one of leaders in my life. His name is nut; he is a funny guy and always makes friends happy to be with him. One thing that makes him becomes the great leader of our group is he makes us impressive in his actions. For instance, he sacrifices to be punished from teachers for us in the bad things that we make in school. He always said that you have to be brave to live in the cruel world and this word remind me that I have to be brave to tell the truth and be brave to face with all of the problem.
All in all, my leader is not to look good, not to have a beautiful word, not to be famous and not to be the great leader for other people. People who make me remember and make me impressive in their actions are the people that I will count to be the great leaders.

There are a substantial number of people who influenced me in my life. Many of them are the one that I know and many of them are the one that I don’t know even know them personally. However, I called them idols, not the leader.
In my perspective, leadership means a person motivates and inspires others to accomplish their goal and leads to innovation. All these great leaders have something unique about them but not everyone can be a great leader.
Mao Zedong comes up to my mind as a great leader of all time. Mao transformed the economy of China into one of the major industrialized economies of the world. Without him, China would not be a major world power today. Even though I’m not Chinese or live in China, I have been to China several times. I always hear the story about him and how much Chinese people admire him. What made him great might be applicable in today’s day and all the big changes for Chinese people that he did. I impressed and admired him because he reminds me of how great leader should be. I have no doubt why Chinese people consider him as a hero and they are so grateful for it.

  7. Several years ago, when i was studying in a Thai boarding schools. I was voted to be the deputy head boy for my boarding house. My duty is to control more than two hundred students in the house. It was a good year that I had an opportunity to lead people. For me, It was a good introduction to leadership. When i was the deputy head boy, I always thought about one person who influences me all the time. He is Richie Mccaw, the captain of the Allblacks. In a rugby game, he needs to control his crews who play in the game of madness and pressure, and command all of his teammates to do as the trainer commanded them to do. It is a very tough duty because rugby is a dangerous sport. Players can be easily angry at all time, so the captain needs to control them all. The results of being a good leader for him is that he won the reward call "Rugby player of the year" twice, and he deserve that. He is the best leader in my life.
For him, it is not only about being a good leader for the team, but to have a good game of rugby together with his teammates. When the team lose, he is the one who stands by his teammates and tell them not to be upset about the result. He need to have the strongest mind in the team when the team miss the title.

There are a lot of people define leadership in similar and different ways. The definition of leadership is elusive which we cannot put it in the exact answer. However, there are common attributes most leaders must possess. Leadership, in my opinion, is not like management or directing, but inspiring and influencing. Leaders always have visions and then change those visions into reality. Besides, individuals are free to decide whom is their leader and be willing to follow.

The very first person that comes to my mind is our beloved King Rama 9 of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He have been a great leader for over 60 years. People all over the world recognize him as one of the greatest leader. King Bhumibol have carefully looked after his country and citizen with heart, spirit and fairness. He had done many things which bring prosperity to the land. Moreover, he kindly gave a path and real great philosophy as example for Thai people to live conscientiously and be able to avoid physical and mental misery. For instance, sufficiency economy, emphasizing on middle path which persuading people to live sufficiently.
Importantly, leadership is not about making good speeches but making concrete results.

I would say my high school basketball coach is a great leader. He goes by the name of Coach Frank, short for Frankenstein; he got a pretty scarred face. I went to an international school and to summarize my teammates are that we are spoiled brats, being spoon fed from the very beginning. Respects for seniors are low to the minimum let alone the teachers. But Coach Frank is different he had his ways to deal with us and lead us to a better version of ourselves.

Coach Frank was once on the Thailand national team therefore his knowledge of the game is unquestionable. He taught us proper way to play the game, to enjoy ourselves. He is not a strict coach nor he punishes, he is more of a friend, teaching through laughter so there is no reason to hate him that lead us automatically to be obedient since there is no reason to rebel which later translate to our personalities. He never scolds his players not even once but he uses very loud voice very often but not scolding, nothing harsh.

I believe Coach Frank would see himself as a mentor or a role model compared to being called a leader since he is a coach not a captain but in my opinion he is both a coach that teaches us the game and a captain that lead us to our victories.

There are so plenty of leaders in this world that i have heard or know of. i was also leaded by many of them and they were actually good leaders. However there is only one leader that i want to talk about. My father. The greatest leader ever.

I have never been regret having him as my father ever. He has that teaching that stay in my mind and always keep me on the right track. To be honest i would not have today without him. He teaches me to be a good person. "Being perfect is nothing if you are not a good person" he said. He told me that he will die in peace after he knows that his sons be good boys.

good leaders are not about being famous or can lead lots of people. But good leaders are that kind of people who can actually make people become better person and do better things. Does not have to be so many people but just one. My dad leaded me and my brother to be good person. And i want to thank him for everything he has done for me and i believe that he is the best leader for me. thank you dad :)

There are many kind of leaders that come to my mind. They may have a several of characteristics and qualities which depends on skills and the situations, but the point of leaders is always want to make world a better place. The main characteristics of leader should consist of confidence, positive attitude, commitment, and ability of communication. Accordingly, whenever I feel disappointed or depressed all of those capability, it is inspire me to accomplish the thing I almost give up.
Personally, my ideal leader is king Chulalongkorn who transformed Siam (the previous name of Thailand) with the successful of emancipation of slaves. Of course at that time I am not born yet but I was learn about the history and the king fifth of Bangkok is the very first person that come to my mind. King Chulalongkorn nominated all his life to Thai people and make Siam to be a civilization city. Emancipation of slaves was the enormous change of Thailand which is took 31 years to complete a king’s aspects to emancipate by peaceful. Moreover, there also another reforms that lead Thailand survival in the midst west of western colonialism.
As I can learn from an attitude and visions of Chulalongkorn king, no matter how big it is or how long it take, but finally if we do not give up, we will success anyway. That is why I think king Chulalongkorn is the best leader which come first to my thought.

There are many leaders in this world, but not many great leaders. In my perspective, great leaders mean the leaders who have done great things for others and always think of others before themselves. Some of these leaders may have to sacrifice themselves in order to help make this world a better place for others to live.

Abraham Lincoln is one of the great leaders I admire. He is the 16th president of the United States of America. Furthermore, he is the person who set the black skin slaves free. He initiated rules that made slaves illegal and, therefore, there were no slaves after that time. However, in order to set the slaves free, there was a war between the north and south states. This was because the slaves were in the south states and people in the south states did not want to lose their slaves. Lincoln wanted the two states to unite and fortunately the north states won, so the two states were united and became a country.

Lincoln is one of the great leaders whom I am very impressed with and admire because he has used his power in the right way by raising humanities. Moreover, I believe that every great leader has done precious things to their people and societies. Therefore, I have no doubt why they inspire many people to do great things. After all, their goodness will always touch our hearts.

For 19 years, I have known about many leaders and their achievement. The one that I known the best, which he is neither famous nor powerful to this world, is my grand father. He came from China with his uncle and started from zero.

Firstly, he found a job and collected money and started to do a business with his uncle. My grand father, who has good personalities, which he makes elder employees admired him because he know how to manipulate his employees with his sense of humor. As this quote “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. But when you become a leader, success is all about growing others (Welch, n.d.).” He always took care of his employees such as took the employees that were ill to the hospital. After many years, he separated to do individually business and created a family. He was slowly succeeded with his work and took care of his kids. He taught his kids to be a good person as my father and uncles are now.

In addition, my grand father never has a day off. Up until now he works hard everyday, when it comes on the holidays such as Songkran or New year everyone tried to convinced him to go relax but he never go on vacation with us. Therefore, we asked him why don’t you take some rest? And then he said, “he was at the lowest point and he do not want to go back there ever again.”

In my opinion, my grand father might not be the one that important to this world but he is the important part of my universe, who created a perfect family even though we do not have everything in this world but we live happily as we are now.

In my life, I have met lots of different leader. I have seen lots of difference type of the lead, how they lead and how they control the team. Some of them are not very good in leading but some of them are great. A good leader is the leader who can made a good thing for the team and think about other before they think about themselves.

Leader that i know in my life was my high school basketball coach, She from Philippine International Basketball Team. She is a very good coach. I like how she coach our team. All of the player are not perfect some of us play very good in basketball, but some are not. She can remember all the matches we played. She told us what is our mistake and plan the new game plan for the next game to make us better than the game we played.

In my opinion good leader don't have to be a perfect man or woman. All they have to do is lead the team to the better way or made every teammate improve they weakness. As i learn a leadership is not about making good speeches but making concrete results.

In my 22 years of life, I have encountered many that can be classify as a great leader, one of which is the captain of my tennis team back in my highschool in Australia.

With such young age of seventeen, he has shown his great leadership skills through not only his actions on the court, but also the ability to make people around him listen to him. His ability to analyse the opponents' skills and personalities both on and off the court, has lead many of the team's matches to victory. Every matches we had both singles and doubles, were planned by him. Every game we played, we improved a little due to his advises which points out where we went wrong and how could we improve our plays. But that is only his ability in tennis, but what makes him a good leader to us, is that we enjoy having a caption which leads use with sincerity and calmness while putting aside his anger and disappointments from our failures. For three years, he has never scream, yell or shout at us for making mistakes and failing, but instead calmly encourages us and pointing out where can be improve and what can we do to improve.

To me, a good leader, doesn't need to have a great ability on whatever he/she is doing, but instead have the ability to make his team respect, listen, and follow him/her. With such aspects, regardless of his/her lacks of ability to perform well, he/she is still consider as their leader whom they will listen to and follow him/her.

My mom is the person who plays important role in my life and she is a great leader in the family. The reason why she is important in my life is that she taught me a lot of life experiences and she also made me learn from her past life experiences. Another reason why she is important is that she takes care of me and my elder brother. My parents divorced and my mom is the one who takes care of both of us, my brother and I. She also supports us financially, she is the one who pays for our university fees because our father does not support us in anyway at all. This is why she is an important person in my life. The reason why she is a great leader is that she leads my brother and I to be better person who can co-operate with others. She corrects us when she thinks we are going to the wrong way or learning negative things that will affect us in a bad way. There are times she is wrong, I am not saying that she always gives correct answers. A great leader can be wrong sometimes, they don't need to be correct all the time.

Leader is a person who others always want to follow. To be a leader, you do not have to be powerful or famous but you just need to be a good example for the followers. Good leaders always provide new trends or ideas that can benefit their followers. In my life, I have seen many leaders but only some of them are a good one.
Different people are having different leaders. For me the person who I called as the best leader in my life is my father. He always tries to be a good example for his kids or even his wife. My father has never done anything that he would not allow his children to do it as the example for us. He teaches us many things that no other people will teach. He teaches me to be a good person. He inspires me to study art. He did not just teach me or show me many good things but he also cares us because good leaders have to always care their followers. The leader who gave a great influence on my character building is my father. I thank my father a lot, especially for opening my world. He told things from many points of view, and he did not press his opinion on me. Therefore, I could develop my ability to think and independence. Moreover, he is honest to me. When I did something wrong, he did not scold me but he told the reasons why it is wrong until I understood. He did not become angry without a rational reason, and apologized to me when he thought he did wrong. He does not cheat me so I can believe him. I think that mutual trust is an important factor to lead someone. My father makes me to become an independent person who can consider what is correct and what he or she has to do. It is sure that he is an ordinary person, but he is a great leader for me.
