We have been working to brainstorm topic ideas and to organize those ideas that we could communicate in an essay format. It is so important to not just
get an idea, but it is maybe even more important to understand
where that idea comes from. We have been narrowing from a theme to a sub-theme to a field to a subject to a situation and to a topic... I want to see this in this journal blog, and please say a little bit about what you expect this essay to explain.
It is hard to say how important this process is, because before you know it, you will start to write only to realize that you don't know what you're writing about. Take the time and think with care about these steps.

ReplyDeleteGiven the theme of leadership, I would like to categorize my topic to be related to science. Science and leadership are undeniably two overlapping fields. Without new researches and innovations, there wouldn't exist any machines or medicines that have lead life to be this secure. Focusing on the biological area with a subject of stem cells would make the idea more precise. The situation deals with an on going research about the benefit and vice versa of stem cells to human race. Therefore, I now decides that "Stem cells, a benefit that should be restricted" is the topic of my essay.
Ok... can you help me to understand how restriction of stem cell research is related to leadership?

ReplyDeleteAs the theme is leadership, I would like my sub-theme to be about technology. The technology that I will talk about will be in the websites field. To be more specific, I would like to talk about "Google ", which is the world's most popular website. This website lead people to more convenient life. For example, nowsadays, people can search for things they want to know on Google other than spending lots of time in the library, and the results will appear in a few seconds. So, "Google, Gate of knowledge" is the topic that I would like to choose for my essay.
Ok... gate of knowledge is ok, but it is still quite wide... Please narrow further. Who are you talking about exactly? What kind of knowledge do you mean? Etc.

The director needs the quality of leadership to mange the crew and inspire them to work. I believes that Steven Spielberg has the good qualities of a leader. In my essay I would like to talk about Steven and his leading skills. Lastly, my final topic would be "A master of filmmakers".
Ok... I like this. Please you narrow down on one specific way Spielberg is a leader in film making. Is about something technical? Is about story telling or writing? Is it about his personality? Be more specific.

I would like to write about Donald Sterling to answer the question 'can you be a good leader but a bad person?'. Donald Sterling is a billionaire so he must be doing something right in the business aspect and he is a straight up racist so that makes him a not so good person. As of now i am still uncertain whether i will take Sterling's side in this essay and defense him saying that is who he is and he was raise a certain way or on the other hand focus on him being a racist.
This is interesting. You may consider this topic in a different way. While Sterling seems to have been a successful business man, the question may be whether or not a racist can be/should be the owner of an NBA team. As it appears he has been removed, you may write about how racism is unacceptable in NBA ownership.

Ok... but the link to leadership is unclear. Firstly, I think you're talking about teenager GIRLS. Secondly, think of how WOMEN celebrities influence (lead?) teenage girls. While women celebrities may be models (role models?) for teenage girls, the things that young women learn are not positive messages.
