Journal Blog #2: Synthesize and Summarize

We have been analyzing the construction of Gladwell's essay, In the Air. He tells 3 stories in detail about different kinds of people who we would consider geniuses, experts, inventors, and innovators. The phenomenon that he introduces us is that of multiples: the idea that innovation is in some way inevitable. It is a kind of evolution where whoever is in the right place at the right time with the right frame of mind will be the one who takes the next step and invents or discovers the next big thing.

The difficulty in summarizing is that it demands that you knit together a lot of ideas into a neatly packaged paragraph. In Gladwell's essay, we have 3 stories that are all examples of multiples. Your task is to synthesize the main ideas of each story into one summary paragraph about multiples. Develop your sentences carefully and work to explain to a reader what this essay is about in not more than 10 sentences. (Less is better).

Post your summaries on the blog and the best will be reviewed in class. Remember to include your ID# and Section # in your post. Aj. M

The world is big, full of many people with tons of ideas. In a company called Intellectual Ventures consist of 8 to 9 people they think of more than 500 ideas per year. Ideas are unlimited and its in everywhere in the world. Some people might have the same ideas some might not that is why there is a scenario when different people at a different place discover a same thing at a same time and this called “multiple”. Because we do have the same foundation and the same goal that is why some innovations and ideas are inevitable. The only difference that makes us remembered one of them is patent. He or she is at a right place and at a right time.

Basically, multiples mean the phenomenon of discovering in the meantime because humans has been living at the same time or has been studying same knowledge. It is undeniable that ideas are in the air. To clarify, 3 stories from the ERS book explain how they relate to multiples. In the first story, there are two people who are Jack Horner and Nathan Myhrvold. They work together to find dinosaur bones and they succeed it. Although they might not discover it, somebody will find out due to the multiples. In the second story, Bell and Grey invent telephone similarly, but Bell is more memorable since he present first. If Grey present first that time, we will know him. Lastly, Myhrvold commences his company by hiring the smartest people to make ideas and sell it. His team can provide fresh ideas around 500 patents per year and lots of them are interesting or useful ideas. Nonetheless, if he dose not start this company, someone will make it because of multiples.

Every idea is in the air, they are just waiting for someone who can deeply see and grasp them and work hard on them in order to create something new to the world. This concept definitely leads us to know the word of multiples. Different people are inventing the same object in the same time but diverse places are the real definition of this word, multiples. Moreover, if someone does not continually generate a thing, the multiples belief will say that there will be the other persons who are also interested in that thing will create it instead. In short, there will be always the substitutionary persons in every idea. The examples of this phenomenon can be found in the stories from this reading. According to the first story, both Myhrvold and Horner focus on the same thing which is about dinosaur, and then got the fresh idea to seek the dinosaur bones. However, it takes such a huge effort to discover the dinosaur bones, but eventually, they, Myhrvold and Horner, found a substantial amount of bones. This situation can be linked with the phenomenon of multiples that there is more than 1 person who has the same favorite interest at the same time but different places. Moving to the second one, most people will probably realize that the original innovation of telephone is noticeably invented by Bell. Nevertheless, Bell is not the only person who has the idea of creating the telephone. Gray is mentioned in this subject as well, but the reason that Bell becomes more renowned than Gray is that his background does not, in fact, link with the science field before; he is just interested in building telephone and work hard on it. In addition, this indicates that if Bell does not invent the telephone, it will be Gray who respectively creates the phone. The last story of this reading which is about intellectual company is the center of gathering the fresh ideas from genius people which also means that all multiples phenomenon are located in the right place and time in order to succeed its goal.

The idea is in the air. If someone had not discovered it, someone else would have. "Multiples" mean the phenomenon that people across the world who may never met each other, living in difference places have discovered same things at the same time! People might not believe that this is true, but I would like to say that this could be happened everywhere. This essay will give three wonderful stories to let you know more about what are multiples phenomenons. To begin with the first story, there were two people, one was Jack Horner, who was studying about dinosaur, and Nathan Myhrvold who is the dinosaur lover. These two people tried to find dinosaur bones in the place that have been discovered more than hundred years. Surprisingly, they can found it. This case can tell a link between multiples which is if they might not do it, somebody will will do due to the impossible phenomenon called "multiples" another story from discovering a telephone, almost everyone knows the name "Bell" who invented telephones, but no one knows "Grey" another guy who invented telephones either. Because Bell presented this idea first, but Grey did not. Therefore that is why we do not know this name "Grey". Lastly, Myhrvold established a company called "Intellectual Ventures." This company can create fresh and useful because Myhrovold collected smart people that he knew across the world put them together at the same place to sell ideas that someone might wants it. Again, the mystery power of multiples will do it.If Myhrvold does not.

Idea is in the air. While you are think about something, there might be others from another continent or place who are thinking the same ideas as yours at the same time. This mentioned perspective can bring to the word “multiples” that means an unexpected phenomenon or discovery that is found at the same time by different people who might not know one another. According to (Gladwell, 2008), there are three perfect situations from the article named “In the Air” which explains the clear definition of multiples. To begin with the first story, Myhrvold and Horner who are interested in the same objects that is dinosaur can cooperate and successfully discovery the dinosaur bones. This story can show us even though people do not live together and and live away from one another, some might possibly have the same interest. In the another one, Bell is recognised as the person who invented telephones. However, if people learn about this object more, they will found out that there was another person Grey who thought of telephone at the same time. The reason that Bell is the memorable inventor because he published it first. Hence, as you can see in this situation, it shows that if someone did not invent some amazing ideas, there might perhaps be others who can invent them. Lastly, it is about Intellectual Ventures company established by Myhrvold which assembles many experts from different fields to create new ideas or patents for other companies. This story indicates that many people around the world from different nationals, fields and even ages can have the same ideas.

Multiples is defined as the phenomenon of discovering from various people in different places at the same time. It is reasonable to say that ideas are everywhere. According to the Ers book, there are 3 different stories which are related to multiples. First story is the story about Jack Hornor and Nathan Myhrvold who discover the dinosaur bone. Even though these two people cannot find the dinosaur bone, there will be someone find them. Secondly, the story about Bell and Gray who are invented telephone at the same period. However, Bell is more popular that Gray because Bell is the first people who present telephone. If Gray present before, it will be sure that Gray will be more popular that Bell. Lastly, the story from Myhrvold who is invented the company that sell ideas. This company can sell a great deal of ideas which can make a significant amount of money. Nevertheless, if Myhrvold does not invent this idea company, there will be someone invent it. All in all, all these 3 stories are link together due to multiples.

From 3 anecdotes - T. Rex market share, the invention of the telephone and Intellectual Venture-, there are different people are interest in the same thing, and to reach a goal they have to coordinate. Noticeably, the discovering generates by a group of people or, at least, a partner. Therefore, is there the only person who interest in the same thing?- No. There are a phenomenon called "Multiples"; which means different people find out the same thing at the same period of time, but they didn't know each other. For example, as everyone know Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of telephone, however, Elisha Gray is the one who got the idea of invention telephone either. You are not the only person in the world if you aren't find out or do it, somebody will do it.

We are all living in the same world, learning the same thing, and hearing same kind of stories therefore, its not surprising that someone else in this world would have the same thinking as you. The idea is all over places, different people are inventing the same thing in different places at the same time, which goes with the concept of ‘multiple’. The phenomenon of multiples is that inventions or discoveries are inevitable. The three stories in the book help us see a clearer picture of this phenomenon. Many people in this world tried to seek for the dinosaur bones but Horner and Myhrvold, who are not genius, they found the bones that were already there just because they tried to look harder than other people. Alexander Graham Bell, a guy who invented the telephone, if that day Bell didn’t accidently found a puzzle of the harmonic telegraph, he might not be able to create the telephone. However, someone else would have and that person might be Mr. Watson. The last story is about Myhrvold’s intellectual company called "Intellectual Ventures." He tried to gather all the fresh ideas from genius people that he collected from all over the world. If Myhrvold didn’t start this company, someone else in the world somewhere would have.

"Intellectual Ventures" is another form of company that give us the real prove about multiples. The company contains smart and creative people together to patent insights. Company are working along with these smart peoples form around the world, and they were be able to file 500 ideas a year. It is possible to create the insight since there was no rules to limit their brainstorming. They worked on the same interesting topic like medicine with an expert and so, loads of newly ideas are possible to be discovered. Therefore, it is clearly now that Multiples is a magical phenomenon of people trying to develop the same things at the same time.

Ideas are in everywhere, which depends on who is faster to notice and get an opportunity to initiate or create something that improve human beings. "Multiples" can be defined as the unexpected phenomenon when people in different places, different expertises, and different ideas are innovating the same ideas at the same time without relationships between each others. If there is no one discovering the idea, there would be someone discovering it as soon as possible. As "Multiples" is clarified in the article named "In The Air", there are 3 examples of "multiples" phenomenon. In the first example of "multiples", Nathan Myhrvold, an dinosaur lover, formed the team with Jack Horner, an paleontologist, discovering the dinosaur bones in the place that many people believe that there are thousands of bones under the deep ground, but many people were faced with failure. Fortunately, Myhrvold's team found them all because they worked hard enough to find them. This story demonstrates that if the team did not look hard enough, there would be some groups of people looking harder that others and becoming the successor. Another example is that Alexandre Graham Bell, who is renowned from inventing telephone, and Elisha Gray were presenting telephone in the same exhibition, but Bell is the first one to present his invention. This story show that there are always someone who are thinking or inventing something as another person. The last example of the phenomenon is that the Intellectual Ventures, founded by Myhrvold, gather many smart people from different fields and different expertises to generate new creative ideas and sell it, even Bil Gates bought the medicine that cure H.I.V or malaria from I.V. This story indicates that if Muhrvold did not assemble all genius people, there would be someone do it.

According to the multiples, there are many phenomena that can be example of it. The multiples were the events that were created by numerous people in different places and status at the same time. Finding dinosaur bones is the first example of multiples. There are two people, Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner, who were interested in dinosaur bones. They meet each other on the set of Jurassic Park. Myhrvold agreed to fund an expedition with Horner. After that they arrange the team in order to start finding the truckload of dinosaur bones. Most people had not been finding bones for along time because they did not look enough. However, Myhrvold and Horner team found more bones than in the last ninety in just nine years. Another example is that there are two people who tried to create the telephone at the same time. Bell and Gray had the same idea about the innovation of telephone. However, Bell was more renowned than Gray as he was the first person who presented the creation of telephone. Actually, if there was not Bell, telephone will still exist because other people such as Gray also generate the telephone. The story about Intellectual Ventures is the last example of multiples. Myhrvold establishes the company, which was called I.V. forming a group of people who were very clever in order to sell for other companies is the process of this company. I.V. accomplished their goal as it filed five hundred a year. However, this company found that it was better to have people who were expert in different types in a group because different ideas and experts can created a fresh perspective. All in all, the innovations and phenomena might not create by one people because there are many people who had the same ideas as the statement show that it going to be someone else.

Idea is in the air, in other word, diffident people in diffident place can have the same idea or discover same thing, it is know as multiples. Due to the fact that now the world become smaller because of globalization. It means that now we live in the same environment, so some people can have same inspiration or same interesting. For example, there are 3 example in Ers book that show how multiples work. First, Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner are interesting in finding Jurassic park bone, but they did not know each other before. Second example is Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray that are interesting in invention of the telephone. Lastly, Nathan Myhrvold had set up a company called Intellectual Ventures which hired the most smartest people together, and this company can created more than 500 insights each year.

The term 'multiple' is describe as the same theories or inventions that are discovered by the same person in same period of time, but in different places. From the reading, three examples clarify the meaning of multiple. For the first example, Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner are the person that shared the same interest of dinosaurs but came from different field of occupation. Second, the story of the invention of telephone between Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray, both of them found the process of telephone invention accidentally. Lastly, the example of Intellectual Ventures company and Nathan Myhrvold, the founder of the company who become very successful by the ideas of their employees. The company contribute around 500 ideas for inventions per year. To conclude, 'multiple' means the sharing of the same interest that leads to discovering or inventing of something at the same period of time but in different places. However, the writer also explained that if a person did not discovered or invented any thing, it is inevitable that someone else will do.

There have been many discoveries by uncountable numbers of scientists, and if the discoveries was not found by then, it would have been founded by other generation of scientists, so discovery was meant to happen anyway that is what the author means by multiple. In first story, two guy have the same passion which is dinosaur. Jack Horner the paleontologist be able to discover tons of dinosaur bones by the fund of Nathan Myhrvold. In the past 90 years no body can find as much bone as Horner, but if Horner cannot find it surely other people will find it. Secondly, Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray are the people who thinking of making an invention that make communication
be more convenient. Both of them have the same inspiration, but the one who known as the inventor is Bell because he presented it first. Thirdly, The owner of Intellectual Ventures, Nathan Myhrvold, he sells tons of fresh idea to many companies, but if he did not inspire those idea someone will inspire those idea anyway. To sum up, these three stories have same point that idea is every where. it depend on us to grab it or let it be grabbed by others.

Telephone is one of the greatest discovery all the time. It was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray. In other word, it was invented by different persons at the different places but in the same period of time. This phenomenon is called multiples. According to the definition of multiples, the innovation must be discovered some day though it have not been yet. For example, Nathan Myhrvold, Jack Horner, and the team found the dinosaur bones under the ground after no-one had never found them for about 100 years. In order to create a new idea and innovation like finding the dinosaur bones, Nathan Myhrvold established the company, named Intellectual Ventures. This company hires the number of genius to create the new idea. These can be applied to make the innovation. Therefore, idea is the most important thing to enable the great discovery.

There are many different ideas around the world from different people. Even though there are many people with different ideas it does not mean that some of them would not come up with the same idea. When something is being invented at the same time with same or similar idea but different people at different places are called 'multiple'. An example would be Bell and Gray. They invented telephone at the same time but most of us recognize Bell because he patteted it first. Myhrvold hire and gather smart people to think of ideas and sell it to others.Jack Horner and Nathan Myrvold found more dino. bones just because they work harder than those who are finding it before them. Even if those people didnt happen to complete it someone else would still complete it one day.

We are not alone, there might be someone that has the same thinking at the same time. This phenomenon is called “Multiples,”which is the situation of discovering that has various people think the same way. According to Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, there are three stories that explain in more details about the circumstances. The first story is the exposure of dinosaur bones, those bones were discovered by Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner. By the help of supportive funds, they have successfully found those bones. However, if it is not Horner and Myhrvold, it might be someone who has discovered. And also another story, which is about Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray, who invented telephones. Even though, Bell is more famous than Gray as Bell presented at the Philadephia Exhibition first. If that presentation Gray is the first one, then he will be esteemed instead of Bell. Finally, the last story that established an idea company. They generate the idea and license with companies that are interested. The same concept as the prior stories. As a result, no matter what will have to be initiated in this era, it will not be only a person that has the idea.

  20. Multiple can be defined as the phenomenol that people from different places around discover innovation at the same time. In other words, if one do not do it, others will do. Multiples is a new nothing being discovered by two or more different individuals who are not related what so ever. First example is of Jack Honor and Nathan Myhrvold who managed to discover fossils of dinosaurs in a site where people has been looking for decades and came out empty handed. However Jack Honor and Nathan Myhrvold both discovered the fossil of a T rex bone. The writer of this essay also points out that if they did not find it eventually someone elese would stumble upon it. A sound example of Multiples comes from the invention of telephone, this invention has been credited to numerous inventor but the first inventor who manage to popularise his invention ended up most popular therefor when you ask someone who invented the telephone people would normally say it was Alexander Graham Bell. Final example is that of the Intellectual Ventures which was a company founded by Nathan Myhvold, this company basically gathers approximately 500 Different individual and give them an interesting question, which is a problem that need a solution most of the time, and let the individuals take their time to come up with new innovations or solutions to those problems. What all theese stories have in common is that if the first person who invented or discovered something did not discover it, it is more than likely, almost certainly that someone else will.

Ideas aren't as rare as shown by malcolm gladwell in the anecdotes. It seems as it pops up from air, just like the company intellectual ventures formed by myhvold they are easily able to come up with new ideas .

The writer also explains a bizarre phenomenon called "Multiples" where different people in different places, who may have never met are able to discover/invent the same thing at the same time.

This is shown by the writer by explaining how Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha grey inventing the telephone at the same time or when Jack Horner and Nathan Myhrvold were able to find truckloads of dinosaur bones at place where people haven't one for a long time.

The writer also hows that it was inevitable that the telephone or the dinosaur bones were found, if it had not been them someone else would have found it.

Multiple is a phenomenon, and there are 3 examples of multiples which are dinosaur bones, the first telephone, and a lot of great ideas. Voluminous dinosaur bones are discovered by Jack Hornor and Nathan Myhrvold who like dinosaur come from different places. In addition, both Bell and Gray invent the telephone even though as we know that Bell invents the first telephone, Gray also another person who invents it. Finally, Myhrvold and his team create numerous ideas and sell to others who are interested. However, if they did not get those ideas, some people might get it. These stories demonstrate that not only can one person who is smartest discovers and invents but it also includes every person. It always has other people who invent and discover things. This might be because they have the same environment, and it is a normal thing that sometime people might have the same ideas. To sum up, the “Multiples” phenomenon can happen all the time.

The phenomenon of discover same things by different people and different time. This can be called ' multiples '. Anyone can be an innovator, it just depends on who announce it first as there are many people who came up with the same idea. To give the clear examples, Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner that came from different occupation can have the same interest of dinosaurs. Moreover, Bell and Grey both invented telephone, but Bell is more memorable because he announce first. And the last support is that Myhrvold established the company that hired many smart people and created a ton of ideas and then sell them to others companies. All of this are related to multiples as they can think of the same ideas but different place and time.

The word "multiples" can be determined in many ways, like in mathematics way, but the meaning of this word that I am going to say is about "phenomenon." We may live in a different places but we all live on the same planet. We are learning things in the same generation in this period of time. The invention of the telephone was from Alexander Graham Bell as we all known. But actually he was invented the telephone on the same period of time with Elisha grey. They just came up on the presentation event at the same time and they did not know each other before. It is so amazing that they both which never saw each other before in their whole life and live in a different place from each other just invented an amazing thing at the same time. This phenomenon is called as "multiples." Whether you live in a different place, they gotta be someone who think like you, if Alexan Graham Bell didn't invent the telephone, Elisha grey would be the one which we would remember him as a telephone inventor.

Multiples are the discovery phenomenon that inventors or scientists around the weorld who have never met each other before have discovered the same things at the same time. This can potentillay describe that mulitples are inevitable to happen . To further clarify, the emerge of the expedetion of Honer and Myhrold can be a helpful illustrates. They were the two explorers who have passion to discover the dinosuars. Even though, old generation people were fail to find the dinosaurs, they are successfully discovered it in nine years. This events can elaborate explain why the two inventors are able to find the bones becuause they have determination and inspiration to search than people in the past. Another advantageous example is about the two scientists whose name are Bell and Gray. Bell was trying to invent the telephone by doing the experiments with his assistants. Accidentally, his assistants can heard his voice from the telephone so he went to present his invention in Philadephia. In the meantime, the other scientists “Gray” were there to present the same exhibition too. If Bell was not the one who invent the telephone, somone will do it anyway. Last but not least, the example of mutiples is the company called Intellectual Ventures. The ower of this company called Myhrvold hire the empoyess who are intellegent and have great vision from all around the country. This company try to make a creative ideas and effec tive solutions to solve the problems of the present time. Their objective of this company is to create a brilliant ideas and sell it to the customers. All of this events can describe the meaning of multiples that the ideas are always around us because it is in the air. Even though, the invention might not happened in the past, it is unavoidable that in the future someone will discovered it. The explanation might be that the great expedition can happened accidentally or coincientally.

Multiple can determine in many ways, but I will talk about phenomenon. It is something that can happen in same time, but different place and different people. I have 3 example. The first one is about Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner. These two guys are different jobs, but they are interested in the same thing that is dinosaur. The second is about Bell and Grey who invented telephone, but most of people know only Bell because in the past, these two guy are promote their phone, but Bell's telephone is better than Grey, so people remember only Bell because they think Bell is genius. The last one is about Nathan Myhrvold. This example is called Intellectual Ventures. He build hos own company and hire many smart people to create idea to sell to customers. All of these example are related to multiple.

Multiple are defined in phenomenon that different people and different place can create the same thing and the same time. For example, Nathan Myhrvold and Jack Horner who are interested in the same thing that is dinosaur bones, but these two guys have different jobs and come from different place. Some of them work very hard but some just do what they know best but they all at end up in the same place, which is inventors. In my perspective, the phenomenon that Gladwell had introduced to us taught us many things such as; what we know these days might not be true or if someone did not innovate something then others would have.

Ideas are in the air that is the core concept of 'multiples'. (Multiples refer to a phenomenon in which different people, in different places are discovering the same thing in the same time.) Gladwell compares ideas, to fossils and come up with a convincing analogy. Ideas are in the air, the same way as fossils are in the ground. They are there, already existed, and waiting to be found. The people who put in enough effort, like Myhrvold and Horner, get to the discovery first. But it doesn't have to be them, because sooner or later these discoveries are bound to happen. It’s inevitable. For example, the story of Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha grey who invented the telephone in the exact same time. It was a race, which Bell won. He then became the father of telephone, but what this really means is it doesn't have to be Bell. If not Bell it would have been Grey. Telephone is in the air, and was bound to be discovered. Intellectual Ventures is a company that believes in this concept, and they put up tons of resources to search, and sell these ideas. And they must have done something right because they found 500 quality ideas per year ranging from refined plastic to shoes to safer nuclear reactor. Myhrvold, the founder, said surprisingly during his first invention session "There are so many inventions". Gladwell would reply with the first line of his essay; who says big ideas are rare? It’s in the air.
