Writing academically is different from other kinds of writing. It requires a different set of vocabulary. It requires a special kind of tone and voice. It also requires attention to detail and support that makes you sound like an authority on the topic of which you write. Despite new media and new forms of communication, academic writing continues to be the medium of communication in the academic community... and guess what... you have now joined that community at MUIC.There are many reasons why you may find academic writing harder than other kinds. You may actually enjoy writing... writing to a friend, writing poetry, writing creatively... some people find this relaxing, a hobby, or even fun. On the other hand, academic writing tends to instill fear in us because we may not know this kind of language yet.
In this first journal blog, explain what makes academic writing for you. Don't say grammar... because this is typical and everyone struggles with it... and I mean everyone. Think about other things about academic writing that you find particularly intimidating.

The academic writing requires many vocabulary to write it. It does not want to have some words that are basic in this type of writing, such as good and bad. It also requires high grammar structure level to make their essay more complex. DeleteThe academic writing is so difficult owing to many factors. Firstly, some essay topics have ambiguous meanings which make it difficult for writers to understand. Also sometimes the topics are too specific which writers do not have strong points to support their answer. Furthermore, academic writing requires high standard of vocabulary because writers want to make it more complex. Additionally, writers have to establish an academic writing creatively and fluently so that readers can enjoy reading. Academic writing is difficult because it is specific, but I would argue that a topic can never be too specific. More specific means more difficult. More difficult means higher quality.

DeleteTo write an academic writing needs a variety of skills. One of the most necessary skills is vocabulary. It supports the reader to approach the content and detail of the book easily, also a numerous vocabularies will completely catch reader's attention. Grammar is also an important factor to be focused on when writing an academic journal. Understanding and structuring will be provided by grammar which means that if writers do not have an advance skill of grammar, readers will completely confuse what the writer are trying to narrate. If writers already advance in grammar and vocabulary but they cannot write fluently or it is hardly to continue to read, this can also ruins and destroys an academic writing. DeleteAcademic writing is hard because it requires several skills to make my essay to sound academic. In academic writing, I have to use academic words to make essays to sound professional, and I have to keep my essay to be clear and easy to understand. There are numerous varieties of academic writing, such as non-reference essay and reference essay. I have problem on non-reference essay because I might have no enough idea and no interest on the topic what I have to writing in examination. Moreover, during the exams I have to manage the time, which is difficult for me. Half of the time, I spend most of the time in the introduction paragraph and write a conclusion less than a minute. For the reason is that I think hook in first paragraph can catch people attention. However, I never have good ending in my essays.

ReplyDeleteThe academic writing is very different from another type of writing because the writers should be prepared or should practice a lot in every skill for making the writing completely perfect, such as vocabulary and complicated advance grammar skills. The writers should build vocabulary skills so that they can apply a variety of vocabularies to their writing. For the particularly intimidating part for me is how to make the writing to be easy to follow and how to make each paragraph of the writing to connect with each other. For example, if my writing is clear and my arguments are easy to follow, then readers can figure out what I’m trying to communicate and they can explain it. On the other hand, if I cannot make the writing to be easy to understand or my text is unclear, then the readers may be very confused, and they may not continue reading my writing. ID: 5880186

DeleteIn my opinion, the difficulty of academic writing can be separated in 2 big parts; vocabulary and the order of thought. I'm pretty sure that using vocabulary is everyone's problem. As english is not my mother language, I sometimes do don't know which words that need to be used or match in the sentence. Moreover, writing academically doesn't require only the correct words but it requires high level of vocabulary in order to make my writing outstanding and professional. Besides vocabulary problem, the most difficult thing of academic writing is to make the writing smooth and clear. Hence, the order of thought is very important. I always confuse which situation should come first and which point should be included in introduction or conclusion paragraphs.

DeleteAcademic writing is hard because it is something that most people did not use in their life. Teenagers always type informal language when they talk to other online which make them used to some of the writing as they use it everyday. As a result, when we have to write academic style it is hard to change your habit of everyday writing into formal sentence. Moreover, vocabulary is one of the major problem in academic writing. Because academic writing require a lot of vocabulary to be using again and again, the more word you know the more flow of your essay will be. Nevertheless, as a English second language learner, it is hard to write a formal in other language. This is because we are bot native speaker so we do not know a lot of vocabulary or the correct way that English should be written. As a result, it is hard for people who took English as a second language to write English in formal way. Good comment. It is like another language. In a way, we all speak differently when we speak to our friends, to our teachers, to our grandparents, to our little brother/sister. Academic language is also another language that we need to learn, and even for native speakers, it is a new kind of communication.
DeleteI believe that academic writing is hard for every student, especially people who do not basically use English like us. It requires myriad skills for writing in order to be an expert. Nevertheless, practicing could help us to be more professional because we could remember more academic words and adapt those words for our essay. For me, the main problem in academic writing that I suffered is grammar and adaptation of academic words in essay. To support this point, I sometimes use wrong and confused structure because grammar has complex sentences to learn and understand. DeleteFirst of all, academic writing is harder for the 2nd language learners. A lack of confidence and a lack of expression are mostly found in 2nd language learners. Furthermore, academic writing skills require fitted materials. For example, Intro, Body and Conclusion. Also, lots of advanced vocabulary words are needed. Last but not least, laziness. Thai people are well-known for their "OP in LAZINESS". Thai people defines what is the word "slow-life" mean. There is one famous phrase that says "I am just going to do it (replace "do it" with "study the writing") later, I am totally fine". I think the phrase is perfect fit to what's most of the lazy people like to say. In addition, they might even be "Too lazy to stop being lazy" too!!!

It requires various abilities of writers to write it into an essay, making writing academically is more complicated. For example, people have to understand topics and questions clearly to write into their own essay with their own words. Moreover, writers have to organize the essay for readers to understand it easily. It is also hard to convince people's interest by giving an interesting fact in an introduction. In addition, writers should analyze which sentence and vocabulary are appropriate in the essay. Moreover, English is not mother language of Thai people, so it is hard to remember and know lots of advance words. I cannot use some word from conversation because it is informal. Furthermore, when I write academic writing, I have to careful because sometimes readers may not understand what I mean.
